Devotion: Psalm 118:5

July 5 2025

Psalm 118:5 When hard pressed, I cried to the Lord ; he brought me into a spacious place.

When first reading this verse you may find yourself wondering what it has to do with freedom. It seems like a stretch to interpret this psalm as being applicable to the topic. But hang in there – we’re going to go through how it can be.

Being “hard pressed” is the NIV interpretation used. Other versions say “Out of my distress” instead. Whatever version you are using, the meaning is the same. We are able to see the overwhelming pressure that led David to cry out to the Lord for deliverance. Calling on the Lord signifies faith in Him and shows reliance in times of need and hardship. We trust Him to help us and can be assured He has a plan for our life and will hear us.

And we see in this verse that He did hear David’s cry for help. He brought him away from the oppression and struggles and “into a spacious place.” He led him from the bonds that held him back and ushered him into a place of plenty. It is a powerful metaphor for freedom and deliverance. Whether physical or spiritual, he was freed of what restricted him and entered into the presence of God.

This psalm is an important reminder that we need to put our faith in God and trust Him to deliver us and provide relief from whatever has us enslaved and in bondage. Trust that He is ready to lead you out of the darkness and into the light, away from restraints and into a wide, open space where we can freely thrive in the glory of His love. Turn to Him today and be free.
