Devotion: Psalm 119:67

Jan 24, 2026

Psalm 119:67 Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now I obey your word.

Psalm 119 is the longest psalm and is broken down into parts based on the Hebrew Alphabet. Today we are most of the way through the psalm. It is not that long, so take a few minutes to read the entire portion before returning here. It is from verses 65 through 72.

The psalmist confesses that he used to go astray, following the ways of the world rather than obeying the Words of the Lord. Confessions are an important part of changing our behavior. We must acknowledge our wrongdoing and ask for forgiveness if we expect to turn away and walk in righteousness and obedience.

The discipline we face when we go astray is not meant so much as punishment for wrongdoing, but serves as a guide to lead us back to the correct path. Without these learning experiences and convictions, we would continue down the wrong road, leading to harsher consequences and further separation from our Lord.

The question is are you learning from these experiences or are you continuing in worldly ways? When we realize we are doing wrong we should act immediately to bring about change in our lives. We confess, repent, and seek forgiveness. And we change our behavior, now valuing God’s laws and Word more highly as we grow in wisdom and deeper faith.

Are you listening? Follow the example of the psalmist and bring about transformation in your life.

Prayer: Lord, I want to be holy and right. I want to obey Your laws and follow Your Word. Guide me in living a holy life of obedience. Amen
