Psalm 126:3 The Lord has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy.
This Psalm comes after the exile in Babylon for 70 years. You can imagine what joy the Israelites must have felt at finally getting to return to their home in Jerusalem. It is this joy that we see in Psalm 126:3. Though they had to rebuild their city and rebuild the Temple of God once more, there was joy and celebration in the process because God had brought them home finally.
Sometimes we feel like the seasons of waiting are going to be endless and will never come to an end. We wait on the Lord, albeit a bit impatient at times, and trust that He has a plan (Jeremiah 29:11). But the days stretch on, feeling endless and unbearable. We live in a society of instant gratification. We don’t like to wait for anything, including waiting on God. But if we can learn anything from the stories of the Old Testament, it is to wait on God and HIS timing, rather than taking things into our own hands. His plan is always so much better than anything we could ever dream up on our own, so why do we think we can do it better than He can?
The rest of the psalm is just as encouraging. “Restore our fortunes, Lord, like streams in the Negev. Those who sow with tears will reap with songs of joy. Those who go out weeping, carrying seed to sow, will return with songs of joy, carrying sheaves with them.”
God knows what you need. He knows where you need to be. He knows what needs to happen in your life. Trust Him. It is worth it. And it will fill you with immense joy! You won’t be able to say anything other than what today’s verse begins with: The Lord has done great things for us!
