Devotion: Psalm 139:7

Psalm 139:7 Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?

Have you ever played hide and seek with someone who seemed to find you every time you hid? It gets frustrating when you can’t hide and they tag you out. Or maybe you are trying to avoid interacting with someone and are feeling like everywhere you go you see them. You might find yourself asking the same question posed in this psalm – where can I go to get away from your presence?

When you are living in sin and not walking in God’s ways, nothing you do can escape His presence. He is everywhere at all times, all seeing, all knowing. And as believers we have the Spirit within us accompanying us as we indulge. He sees not only the things we are doing or the things we should be doing when we refuse to obey, but He also sees your heart and mind. There is no hiding it from Him.

We see time and time again people who tried to flee. Elijah fled to the desert where God revealed Himself in a gentle whisper in the wind. God was there. Jonah fled from his call to go to Nineveh. He found God there with him on the boat, present when he was cast into the sea, waiting for him within the belly of a great fish. God was there for each event in his life and everything in between.

But just as there is no escaping His presence, we also find hope.  He DOES see everything and He loves us regardless. He loves us and forgives us. His guiding Spirit leads us back to the righteous path when we quit trying to run and hide. God is always with us, even in our darkest moments.

Jesus promised us in Matthew 28:20 that He would always be there with us. Draw comfort from that fact. No matter where we go, He is there, He is with us, He is within us.
