Psalm 16:9 Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest secure.
Whenever you see “Therefore” at the beginning of a verse, you know it is a continued thought from the previous. It is always good to go back and read what came before and get a better understanding of the focus verse for the day. (This is good practice regardless. Always read a few verses before and a few after to help you better understand and see the context for the focus verse.)
Prior to today’s verse, David is declaring his commitment to God as the center of his life. A noble commitment, indeed, and something we should all strive for. As a result of this commitment, David shares the gladness of his heart and rejoices in the Lord. His hope is in God and the promises He makes. And because of this hope, he can rest securely, not worrying about what comes next.
God is always there for us. He is waiting for us to come to Him, to talk to Him, to ask for help. He wants that relationship with each of us and is waiting for us to reach out to Him.
Joy will be the result. We can rejoice with praise because of our love for Him and His love for us (Mark 12:30). Death is not the end. We can rest secure knowing that He guides and protects us, and that our hope is in what comes after death.
Is your heart glad? Are you rejoicing and resting secure in His promises? Where does your hope lie?
