Psalm 19:14 – May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.
Though this verse does not specifically mention prayer or any of its associated descriptive terms, we know it is referring to prayer. We see it in the opening words – may these words of my mouth – as well as who the verse is addressing, which is seen at the end – Lord, my Rock and Redeemer. Put together, we get a prayer. In this case it is a psalm, or a prayer that is sung, accompanied by a harp.
When you read the verse in context it makes more sense. In Psalm 19:13 we see King David asking God to help him with sins, that they would not rule over him. He wanted to be cleansed of his sins and blameless before the Lord. This is then followed by today’s verse, where he continues his appeal to God asking Him to not only find him blameless but also to help him speak only what is pleasing.
David wanted his thoughts and words to be pleasing to the Lord, which should be something we desire, too. Colossians 4:6 tells us our speech should be gracious, seasoned with salt. Hebrews 10:25 shows us that we are to encourage one another. In Ephesians 4:15, we are directed to speak the truth in love. Obviously, we should consider all of these verses. God wants us to speak pleasing words, whether directly to Him, as in the prayer of Psalm 19:14, or to one another, as in the other verses.
We also need to have the right heart. Our heart should be made right because, as Jesus pointed out, out of the heart comes our speech. We speak what is in us. If our heart is not right, our words are not going to be pleasing. And what’s worse? If we have a heart full of sin and are not repenting, the Lord will not hear us (Psalm 66:18-20). We MUST make our hearts right so that we can be heard by the Lord.
How is your heart posture? Is it negatively influencing your mouth and ultimately the receipt of your words by God? He wants to help you, He wants to answer those prayers. He wants you to come before Him with a pure heart and pleasing words, which cannot happen on its own. The only way we can do this is through the blood of the Lamb.
Today is the perfect day to set your heart straight and make those prayers pleasing to the Lord. What are you waiting for?
