Psalm 23:1 The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
Today’s verse gives us another name and description or title that we hear often – Shepherd.
The role of a shepherd is to care for and protect their flock. This means they watch over them, guide them, protect them from predators and other dangers, tend to the sick, search for the lost ones who stray, and provide for their overall, general well-being – usually 24/7. When used in a religious context, a shepherd is usually a leader who cares for the spiritual well-being of their followers or congregation.
If you have ever been around or studied sheep you will know they are not the smartest. Left on their own, they will nearly always get into trouble, whether falling into holes or getting stuck in something or wandering away from life sources like food and water… Sheep need a lot of attention and care to keep them healthy and safe. And we are really no different! It is easy to see how we can be compared to sheep and need a Shepherd to guide and care for us.
We see the term used in other passages, as well. In John 10:14-15 Jesus calls Himself the good Shepherd and talks about laying down His life for His sheep. In the Old Testament we see the shepherd reference in Isaiah 63:11 and Jeremiah 23:2. There are many references to shepherds since the Israelites depended so much on their flocks for survival. Seeing verses like Psalm 23:1 would help them see the connection between their flocks and the Shepherd who cares for us as His followers.
Let’s celebrate our Good Shepherd and thank God for His guidance and care.
