Devotion: Psalm 23:4

July 27, 2024

Psalm 23:4 Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

Psalm 23 is one of the more well known Scriptures in the Bible. It is written by David and is meant to give comfort to those who may be struggling. Verse four shows us that God never promised an easy walk, but He does promise we won’t walk alone. He is always there, walking alongside us whether we acknowledge Him or not.

In a world of sin and chaos it is easy to feel fear and discouragement. It is human nature. But we have a loving God who wants to give us comfort. And not only does He freely offer this comfort, we can also find reassurance in the items He carries. The rod was used by shepherds to defend against predators. It was a symbol of authority, power, discipline, and protection. The staff was a walking stick, a tool meant to provide support. These tools were meant to be encouraging to the early believers. Believers both then and now can draw hope and peace from our Shepherd who walks with us and offers comfort.

As we walk through darker times know this: God uses all things for His glory. It doesn’t matter how deep our fear is, He will meet all our needs according to the riches of His glory (Philippians 4:19). Draw strength from this promise. Be comforted by His rod and His staff. And know that He is with us always and will never leave us nor forsake us.
