Devotion: Psalm 27:6

April 29, 2025

Psalm 27:6 Then my head will be exalted above the enemies who surround me; at his sacred tent I will sacrifice with shouts of joy; I will sing and make music to the Lord.

So many of our psalms are laments and cries for God to step in and intervene. Today we see a praise, a psalm that thanks God for victory over their enemies. It begins with a simple statement- then my head will be exalted above the enemies that surround me. We see a figurative expression of triumph that indicates that the psalmist has faced his enemies and may still be surrounded by them but is successful in overcoming, in being victorious. We know that the victories in our life are thanks to God, not due to anything we have done ourselves, and as a result we should give praise where praise is due.

And that is exactly what the psalmist does. We see the next statement that he gives sacrifice with shouts of joy at His sacred tent. He goes to the Tabernacle to make his praises through sacrifices with shouts of joy. That may seem like an odd phrasing – sacrifices don’t typically indicate joy. But in this case the psalmist is celebrating victory and showing gratitude for what has taken place. He is filled with joy at overcoming and is making the appropriate sacrifices at the temple, or in this case the Tabernacle (the sacred tent).

He goes on to express his thanks and joy through song and music making. His joy and gratitude is so deep and heartfelt that he continues his praise after sacrifices have been made. He has a continuous appreciation for the deliverance and protection from the Lord and raises voice to express it.

No matter what we may be going through, we should have faith in God to be our deliverance and our protection. We should trust that He will exalt our heads above our enemies and hardships and we should celebrate success with joy and heartfelt praise.
