Psalm 32:1 Blessed is the one whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered.
We start today by defining transgressions and making sure we understand exactly what we are talking about in this psalm. Transgression comes from the word transgress meaning to pass over a law or rule. When used biblically, we see it used to refer to ignoring the laws or commands of our faith. In the Old Testament, this meant the Law given by God through Moses. Since this verse is from a psalm written by David, we know that the transgressions being referred to are in direct relation to the Laws of God.
We are no longer under the Law. We have new commands given by Jesus that fulfill the Law – loving God and loving others. But we are still sinners and we still transgress. We still make mistakes and commit sins, whether they be biblical commands like loving or behaviors that are not holy (cheating, lying, stealing, breaking laws of the land we live in like speeding, etc).
David says that those who have been forgiven are blessed. We know how reassuring it is when someone we care for forgives us for any sins we have committed against them. It releases a heaviness from us and we are filled with joy. It is easy to understand just what David meant when he called in blessed.
And when that forgiveness comes from God, it is all the sweeter and more meaningful. We have been forgiven of our sins and made righteous in His sight. Jesus became the sacrifice needed to satisfy the requirements for forgiveness of sin. And we are blessed with grace, with eternal salvation, with the Holy Spirit within us. Our sins are covered. They are erased. They exist no more.
Delight in that fact. Celebrate the beauty of forgiveness. Thank God for what He has given you and praise His holy Name.
