Devotion: Psalm 32:2

May 16, 2025

Psalm 32:2 Blessed is the one whose sin the Lord does not count against them and in whose spirit is no deceit.

What a promise of encouragement we have in this verse. It was written by King David and is believed to have been written after his marital affair with Bathsheba and having her husband Uriah murdered in battle. In it we see him express his joy at having been forgiven and the release of guilt from his actions.

In some translations we see sin is written as iniquity. We explored iniquity a few days ago and learned that it is immoral behavior. It usually describes something that is twisted or warped. We know that sin comes from our hearts which are deceitful above all else (Jeremiah 17:9). When caught in the throes of iniquity our warped minds see sin as something desirable, when in all actuality it is destructive.

But iniquity is not a hopeless pit we cannot escape from. David did the unthinkable, sleeping with another man’s wife and then trying to hide the resulting pregnancy by killing her husband. Yet he was forgiven. He confessed his sins and had a repentant heart and his sins were wiped away. He was known as a man after God’s heart. He was deeply devoted despite his iniquity. And he wrote various psalms that celebrate forgiveness because he knew how blessed one could be firsthand.

No matter how bad you think you are, how horrible your sins have been, you are loved by God and He wants you to confess and repent so that your iniquity will not be counted against you. He wants you to be free from the shackles of sin and shame. He wants no deceit within you. Do you want this for yourself? Confess and repent. Seek His ways.
