Devotion: Psalm 34:4

July 15 2025

Psalm 34:4 I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears.

There is nothing more comforting than knowing that we have a God who loves us and hears all of our prayers. This verse from Psalms demonstrates the power of prayer and the comfort we have through trusting Him when we are in need or fearful. We can break it down into three separate parts, which is how we will study it in today’s devotion.

The first part of the verse says “I sought the Lord.” This is important to remember because we can’t just pray and then wait. We need to be actively seeking the Lord, looking for Him, following His ways, and listening for His response. It isn’t a pray and run situation but rather pray and seek Him. We actively seek Him out, deliberately turning to God in prayer and then continuing to seek Him to discern His answer.

We know that He is listening. The second part of the verse says, “and He answered me.” We pray with absolute confidence that He is listening and working for our good, even if we can’t see it at the time. We know He listens because there are so many different Scriptures that tell us He does. And it is through our continued seeking of Him that we hear His response. Our God is attentive and responsive to our prayers. He is not distant, He is not disconnected, and He is not unconcerned with what happens to us. He loves us too much to do that. Instead, He hears us and He responds. It may not be the response we want, but He always responds with our best interest in mind.

And finally, “He delivered me from all my fears.” God’s power frees us from the hold fear has on our lives. Through prayer and our faith in Him we can find freedom from the chains holding us back. We can receive peace and comfort to replace the crippling fears.

Fear has no power over your life any more. Give it to Him and be set free. Remember, God is love and perfect love casts out all fear (1 John 4:18).
