Psalm 36:7 How priceless is your unfailing love, O God! People take refuge in the shadow of your wings.
Today we venture into the Old Testament to look at the love of God described by David, who was a man after God’s heart and deeply devoted to Him. Though it is a short sentence in the psalm, it holds a great message for us and even greater hope and comfort.
Unlike the verses we have studied so far this month, today’s Scripture was originally written in Hebrew. Thus, we don’t have the Greek agape this time. Instead we have the Hebrew word chesed. This term is described as steadfast, unfailing, and as a loyal covenantal love. It is God’s loyal and protective love for mankind. It is a love that binds God to His people in a covenant and it is a love that is constant, faithful, and full of mercy.
We start with how priceless is His love. Have you stopped to consider that question? What can God’s love be compared to? Nothing. It is truly bigger, better, immeasurable… There is no comparison. He gave everything for us. He gave His Son to be the redemption for our sins, to save us from eternal separation, when we were undeserving and sinful. He loved us regardless and still sent His Son to die for us so that we could be with Him in eternity. Nothing can beat that.
David goes on to say people take refuge in the shadow of His wings. Just like a bird shelters its young from the storms, God shelters us and provides refuge beneath His embrace. And he doesn’t say Israel or the Hebrew people gather, but people. One word, all encompassing. All who choose to run to Him will find shelter under His wings. He has room for everyone and He desires to have everyone there. Not just some, but all.
Where do you run for shelter? Do you try to weather the storms by yourself, being beaten and battered by the wind and rain? Or do you run to His arms to be sheltered in the shadow of His wings? Quit running. His arms are open and waiting to embrace you today.
Prayer: Lord, I have battled the storms by myself for far too long. I come to You seeking shelter under Your wings. Protect me, Lord, and give me rest. Amen
