Devotion: Psalm 5:2

October 9, 2024

Psalm 5:2 – Hear my cry for help, my King and my God, for to you I pray.

Sometimes it seems like all David did was cry out to God while running for his  life. A large portion of his psalms were prayers during those times. Today’s verse comes to us while David is fleeing his son Absalom, who tried to usurp his throne (2 Samuel 15:13-14)

Despite fleeing his own son during rebellion, David still has deep faith in God to help. Otherwise he would not have written so many psalms or prayed to God to help. But we see him crying out to God for help. Crying out indicates great distress, which we see later when Jesus prayed in Gethsemane before being arrested (Mark 14:36; Luke 22:42).

David calls God his King and his God. He rightfully acknowledges the supreme power of our Father. He knows who he is praying to and who provides – the same God.

He concludes this verse by acknowledging that it is to God the Father that he prays. His faith remained strong and he was wholly devoted to Him despite the struggles in his life.

What does this mean for us? It is an example of praying without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17), as we see David praying all through psalms, including the time he runs for his life. We also see the respect he gives to God, acknowledging Him as King. We, too, should always remember He is the ultimate power and King. And finally, it is to God we pray. Not to idols, not to icons or symbolic figures. Our God is a jealous God (Deuteronomy 4:24; Exodus 34:14).

Cry out to God at some point today. Be honest about your needs and approach our King with confidence in Him to respond.
