Psalm 5:3 – In the morning, Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait expectantly.
Ever since I was little , I have always been a morning person. And when it comes to spending time with God in a one-on-one scenario, mornings just seem to work out best for me. Not only is it the quietest time in my home, but it just feels right starting the day out with God.
And if today’s verse is any indication, morning was a good time for David to spend time with God, too. His prayers were probably lifted to the Lord at many different times throughout the day, since we know we are to pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17) and we know David was a man after God’s heart. But we see in Psalm 5:3 that God would hear his voice in the morning and in the morning David made his requests. From the moment he woke each day, his thoughts turned to the Lord and to prayer. And since we know this psalm was written during one of the times he was fleeing for his life, it makes sense that his mind would be on seeking God and His will for David’s life.
But not only did he turn to God and lift his requests first thing each morning, but he also waited expectantly for response. He knew God would answer his prayers and he watched for that response in expectation. We do not know if he watched for his prayers to be answered positively, but we know he waited and watched faithfully because he KNEW God would answer regardless.
Too often we think God is not answering our prayers when in reality He IS. We just don’t like the response we get because it is not what we asked for. We think He is not answering our prayers because the answer was no. Or we think He is not responding because it is not coming in the timeline we think response should come in.
We should learn from David’s example. Seek God each day (whether morning, afternoon or evening). And then watch and wait expectantly for His response. He WILL respond, in His time and according to His will for our lives.
