Psalm 69:34 Let heaven and earth praise Him, the seas and all that move in them…
Today’s psalm is one attributed to King David and is a lament. If you are not sure what a lament is, it is a passionate expression of sorrow. Many of the psalms are considered laments and openly express grief or sadness, with today’s psalm being among them. It acknowledges the pain and suffering directed toward God as the psalmist seeks solace and comfort.
Despite being a lament, David still praised God. Just like yesterday when we explored the idea of offering our praise in sacrifice, David chose to cry out in praise. He recognized the need to praise God and called for everyone and everything to join him in that act of worship. He knew that God alone was worthy of his praise, that He was worthy of the praise of every living creature, as well as those things that are not alive (things like the seas).
This psalm transitioned from lament and crying out for deliverance to one of gratitude and praise. David promised to praise God and called for everything else to join him in his worship. The call to worship extended beyond just people to all living creatures. The term “heaven and earth” is all encompassing, to every part of His creation. A day will come when every knee will bow, on earth, under the earth, and in heaven, and every tongue confess that Jesus is Lord (Philippians 2:10-11).
Psalm 69 is a beautiful reminder that we have a God who loves us and will deliver us from the trials of life if we just trust Him. Take a few minutes to read the entire psalm. It is not long, but it is a great reminder that even when times are tough we have a God who loves us and who we should praise.
