Psalm 71:8 My mouth is filled with your praise, declaring your splendor all day long.
How often do you praise God? Think about that question honestly and assess your life. Reflect on yesterday and think of how often you paused to praise Him. For most of us, praise is not continuous. It is sporadic and often nothing more than an afterthought.
There are countless opportunities each day for us to praise God. It doesn’t have to be something huge and life changing, though those are great times to show gratitude. It can be small things, too. The key is recognizing that everything comes from Him and through Him and our response should be to give Him praise in all things ( Philippians 4:4).
The biggest challenge we face is the tongue. Psalm 50:19 says, “You use your mouth for evil and harness your tongue to deceit.” And James 3:8 tells us, “But no human can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.” Both of these verses remind us just how bad our tongue can be. We have to work hard to use our tongue for good. We have to choose to praise until it becomes second nature. And that means getting our head right, our heart focused on Him, and our tongue held in check so that we only allow praise to be spoken by it.
Today let’s make praise our response. Choose to keep Him in focus. Choose to keep your mouth full of praise. Declare His splendor every chance you get today. You don’t have to audibly speak those praises. You can think them. You can sing them. You can write them down. You can pray them. Just focus on keeping your mouth full of praise.
