Psalms 37:3 Trust in the Lord and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture.
Upon first glance this verse has nothing to do with our theme of friendship. But today we will be looking at how this verse can apply to the theme. Before beginning spend a few minutes in prayer asking Him to help show you what He wants you to learn.
The ESV translation is the only one that uses the term “befriend.“ All other versions tell us to trust in the Lord, to rely on Him and have confidence in Him, to abide in Him… The term “dwell in the land” is the same as abiding in Christ in John 15. We trust in God and dwell in Him. David is telling us that we should put our trust in the Lord, find joy in Him, and give our future to Him.
In order to do this we need a relationship with Him first. When you trust in someone you develop a relationship with them, or a deep friendship. You don’t call someone “friend “ if you don’t trust them. So we see that David, a man after God’s heart, is showing us the unspoken truth that we need to be friends in order to abide in the Lord. Those who reject God, don’t trust Him, or seek Him as friend are doomed to a life of struggle and uncertainty. There will be no “safe pasture” and no dwelling in the land for those who do not trust Him as a friend.
Friend, the Lord has plans for you and desires a relationship with you of complete trust and friendship. Do not let the enemy steal your future peace and joy because you do not abide in Christ. Turn to Him, trust Him, seek Him every moment of every day and know that He loves you and calls you friend (John 15:14-15; Psalm 34:15; James 2:21-23; 2 Corinthians 1:3-5; 1 Peter 5:7).
