Devotion: Psalms 5:12

July 22, 2024

Psalms 5:12 Surely, Lord, you bless the righteous; you surround them with your favor as with a shield.

The Bible is full of statements speaking of God’s blessings and favor for the righteous. For example, we see Moses telling the Israelites if they keep God’s covenant, they will prosper (be blessed or find favor with). It is no surprise to see the author of this psalm (likely written by David) conclude with words of assurance for those who are righteous. It was a simple truth that all could draw strength from, just as you and I can do today.

The “righteous” are those who consciously choose to obey and do what is right in God’s sight. They follow Him and are obedient. Joshua was able to enter the Promised Land as a result of his obedience (Joshua 1:6-9). We see it in the New Testament, to. In Romans 8:28 we are told all things work out (find favor, be blessed) for those who love God.

When we find ourselves in God’s favor we know He loves us and wants us to be saved and with Him for eternity. In this Psalm we see God blessing His righteous followers by surrounding them as with a shield. The referendum does not refer to a shield like we think of from medieval times or Captain America. Instead it is a shield offering full body protection. He protects us wholly and completely when we are in His favor. Comforting, right?

Are you living a life of righteousness? Don’t miss out on God’s blessings. He is waiting to surround you as with a full body shield. Choose today to be like the author of this Psalm. Be aligned with God, holding fast to the assurance that He loves you and wants what is best. He is ready to pour out blessings and His favor on you.
