Devotion: Psalms 34:4

July 29, 2024

Psalms 34:4 I sought the Lord, and he answered me from all my fears.

Fear is a natural part of life. But it does not have to be crippling or impede our progress. It may be natural, but it is not something that we should worry about or feel limited by. At least we shouldn’t if we turn to God and ask Him to help us.

King David prayed often, and in many of those prayers (which we see recorded through the Psalms he wrote) he talked about fear. He didn’t refer to the fear as something burdensome or something holding him back. Instead he showed us that we have nothing to fear when we trust God to handle things and be our support. In Psalm 27:1 he says “The Lord is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear?”

Paul said the same thing in Philippians 4:6-7 – not to be anxious about anything, but in prayer and petition make our requests to God. When we turn to God and pray about our fears and anxieties, He gives us peace. We may still have some lingering fear and doubt, but continue to pray and He will fill you with peace.

Are you turning to God when you feel the weight of fear holding you down? Try praying. He is waiting to help you to overcome it.
