Devotion: Revelation 1:18

December 27, 2024

Revelation 1:18 I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades.

In today’s verse we see Jesus speaking to John in his vision of the end times where He declares He is the Living One. But what does He mean by this choice of words or name?

In the beginning was the Word (John 1:1)… He has always been and always will be. He was alive in the beginning and is alive in the End. He has always been alive, except for those three days when He was buried and in the tomb. But He rose from the dead and with it conquered death, taking hold of the keys of death and Hades and rising again victoriously.

As the Living One He gives life. Not only is HE alive, but He makes US alive, too. It is through Him that we become new creations and are justified, given life that can never be taken away from us. Though our bodies may die, our souls will go on forever and we will be with Him for all eternity.

Today celebrate Him as the Living One, who always has been alive and always will be. Take joy in the fact that through Him we, too, will be living forevermore.
