Revelation 4:11 You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being.
Some people fear the book of Revelation or avoid it because they believe it to be too hard to understand or intimidating and frightening. But ALL scripture is God breathed and useful for teaching (2 Timothy 3:16). There is great truth in the book of Revelation and great encouragement. If you have not studied it, you are missing out!
Today’s verse is a declaration of praise spoken by the twenty-four elders who sit on thrones in heaven and offer both prayers and praises to God. Who these 24 are is debated, with some saying they represent the 12 tribes and the 12 apostles while others claim they are a heavenly council of angelic beings. Regardless of who they are, today’s verse is one of their declarations of praise.
The verse shows us a few important points we should keep in mind. Our worship recognizes God’s value and worth. It is the focus of our worship and the foundational purpose. Our own value comes from Him – His creations who are loved beyond measure. He created all things, everything, and those creations should be praising Him in gratitude and reverence. When we realize just how worthy He is, our own worship will be given more freely and will be more authentic.
The elders show us that He is the Creator and it was His will that gave us life and purpose. They point out that He alone is worthy to receive glory, honor, and power. When we worship, we shift our focus from ourselves and put it on Him, making Him the center of our worship.
This portrayal of praise and worship in Revelation chapter 4 serves as an example of what we can expect from worship in heaven. It also shows us how we should currently be worshipping. Fall before Him, cast your crown at His feet, and raise your voices and hands in authentic worship of our Creator who is worthy to receive all glory, honor, and power.
