Devotion: Romans 1:17

June 9, 2025

Romans 1:17  For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed – a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith.”

For those of us who have been Christians for years we often forget the beauty and simplicity of the gospel. It is the most basic concept of our faith, yet is the most important and everything builds upon it. It is through the gospel that the righteousness of God becomes evident. His love for us is revealed to us through the sacrifice He made for our sins on the cross. Simple, yet truly life changing and transformational.

God’s righteousness is expressed through His perfect fairness, holiness, and justice. It is revealed to us the love He has for each of us and His desire to see none perish. But each must live a life of faith, seeking Him and His ways. We must choose to exercise faith by turning to Him and obeying His commands. And as a result we are justified by faith. We live a life of holiness and righteousness, all through the faith we have in Him and what He has done for us.

Paul uses the term righteousness to describe a life that is pleasing to God. Consider your life. Are you living a life set apart and holy? Does righteous living describe the life you are living? If not, what can you do today to make changes and start living for Him?

Remember, Romans 3:22 says, “This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile….” We are given righteousness by the faith we have. And faith comes by hearing the word of God. If we want to live a right life we need to be daily seeking Him and reading the Word of God.
