Romans 12:10 Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.
Oh! Today we are going to get all fancy with our word study! Not only are we NOT being given yet another lesson in agape love, today we get to explore a new form entirely!
The Greek word for love used in Romans 12:10 is philostorgos. I had never heard this term before and had to do some investigating to figure out what it meant. (My studies on the different loves used in the Bible must have never crossed paths with Romans 12:10 because this was the first time I heard the term used. And an extra trivia note for you, this is the ONLY time the term is used in the Bible.) The word is a compound term that indicates a deep, familial, and brotherly affection for others. This term combines the Greek words philos which is friendship or brotherly love and storge which is family or natural affection, creating a compound term that translates as to “be devoted” or “loving dearly.” The compound is used to urge us as believers to treat one another as close family members.
When we use this type of love, it refers to the deep bond of love between parents and children. In this case, it is applied to the Christian community to encourage mutual care between its members, which is then further referenced in the second half of the verse. It goes beyond simple friendship, suggesting a tender, familial, or even “homey” affectionate care. The verse calls for us to honor others above ourselves, with the intended meaning from direct translation to basically outdo one another in showing respect, value, and appreciation. We are to OVER extend our care for one another, giving honor to one another above ourselves.
As believers, the love we show for one another should be “more than.” More than what we would want for ourselves. More than what we think we should give to others. More than what has been done for us. More of Jesus, less of us.
Prayer: Lord, I want to love others with more than I am giving now. I want to love them with more of YOU and less of me. Let Your love shine through my actions. Amen
