Devotion: Romans 12:15-17

June 29, 2024

Romans 12:15-17 Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited. Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone.

Like it or not, we live in a world of division. There are social hierarchies in everything, even in our churches and ministries. We especially see the differing and dividing  hierarchies in our schools. You all remember the “popular” kids versus the rest. And usually there wasn’t harmony between the groups.

But as Christians we are called to be better than that. We are to love everyone and to celebrate and walk through life with one another (John 13:35; 1 John 3:1; 1 Peter 3:8) we should be able to humble ourselves and associate with everyone, not just our friend group. That means setting aside our preconceived notions of groups and seeing people for who they are, individuals all in need of Jesus and His life changing message. Our actions should be done from a place of love and acceptance, not out of duty or guilt, not out of anger or retaliation, but from solidarity and inclusion. We need to do what is RIGHT, not what we want. And we know what is right because we have a Spirit that guides us and convicts us.

Set aside your pride, your attitude, your belief that you are better than someone else.  Set aside the differences that keep you from associating with those who are different. Open your eyes to those around you, those who may be sitting alone or who are withdrawn. Open your hearts to the people in your world, the people who need Jesus or need to be reintroduced to Him once more. Let Him use you today as you reach beyond the invisible boundaries that divide and embrace those within your reach. And rejoice!  This is how Jesus lived and what we are called to do, too!
