Romans 12:2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
Ah, an AWANA verse that takes me back to my early days of Bible memorization. Sweet memories. But such a strong verse and one every Christian should memorize and remember often. It is a great reminder for all believers and one we should take to heart.
But why is it included in our focus on purpose? It seems out there, unrelated, but is definitely something we need to hear and examine under the scope of purpose.
We are cautioned not to conform to the world, which is ungodly and full of evil. We are to flee from all immorality (2 Timothy 2:22) and to be holy. We are transformed into a holy people by the renewing of our minds, which comes from daily seeking His will and reading our Bibles. With this transformation, we align ourselves with God’s will for our lives – our purpose. We see our thinking changed, our habits and behaviors, our desires, our values and our character. We become new creations (2 Corinthians 5:17). And with that changed view of ourselves we find a new purpose in life, to be a follower and disciple of Jesus.
With this renewed mind and realigned life purpose, we are able to discern and understand just what it is that God has called us to, what His plan is for our lives. We discover how much more fulfilling His ways are and just how great He is. We realize how important that call is in our lives to step out in faith and share with others who are influenced by the world as we once were.
Yesterday we ended the day with a simple question – who can you share Jesus with today? And that same question can conclude every devotion this month because that is our greatest purpose. We are all called to make disciples which starts with sharing the story of a Savior sacrificed on a cross in the place where you and I once belonged. I echo that question today and encourage you to step out in obedience and share your testimony with someone. You can share it directly with someone or can post on social media, but listen to His call and open your mouth and share. Lives depend upon hearing that story.
