Romans 4:7 Blessed are those whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered.
Today’s verse is a direct quote from Psalm 32:2, which we explored on day 16 this month. While it may be something we have already covered, there is still insight we can gain from a second look at the topic. And it bears repeating since it is an important message.
The verse begins with the word blessed. Blessed indicates a state of profound happiness, prosperity, and favor by God. This implies that we, as believers, have an inner peace and satisfaction or great joy, regardless of the external circumstances of our lives. This can refer to either physical blessings or spiritual blessings, or both.
In the NIV, we see that it uses the word transgressions, but in other versions it calls them lawless deeds, which is a fitting way to describe the wrongdoings in our lives. We know that our sins go against His laws and His ways. And sin interferes with our relationship with Him.
When we confess our sins and seek His forgiveness, we are blessed and receive more than just forgiveness. We receive blessings. We are restored, redeemed, made new, cleansed and filled with peace and joy. Our sins are covered, removed, blotted out, forgotten, they exist no more. God cancels the penalty and it is no longer held against us. We are once more able to come into His Presence as one who is accepted and righteous. Our shame and guilt are no more, replaced by holiness and acceptance.
Paul’s use of Psalm 32 shows us that justification is a gift given by God for our faith and is not earned by following the law or works we might have done. We are justified, which means we are declared right by God. It should inspire you and fill you with hope and comfort. Our sins are forgiven and we are reconciled to God through our faith in Jesus.
