Romans 6:15 What then? Shall we sin because we are not under the law but under grace? By no means!
Sin is sin, regardless of how “bad” it may seem. We often try to justify sin in our lives and make excuses or comparisons. For example, we say “It’s just a little lie. It isn’t that bad. At least it is not as bad as murder or anything.”
But sin separates us from God, James 4:6 But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.”
At the beginning of the month we learned about humility and being humble before the Lord. As we near the end of the month we are revisiting this topic for another look.
To review, humility is turning away from self and self-centered thinking and behavior, instead turning to God and surrendering before Him. A person who is humble is modest and not proud. They position themselves lower than others, in this case before God. We can be humble around people, but it is more important to be humble before God.
In this verse it specifically refers to pride as being problematic. We need to avoid being pride filled, instead choosing humility. We need to surrender our pride to Him, especially if we know it is a struggle in our lives. If we wish to receive His grace we need to first of all identify where in our lives pride is an issue and surrender it to Him. We then need to seek His help in changing our pride to humility and we need to submit to His authority.
The thing to remember is that He loves us and freely gives His grace to His followers. He shows favor to the humble, but we all receive grace, undeserved though it is.
Don’t let pride interrupt the blessings in your life. Place God at the center of your life and submit humbly before Him. It is true that we are saved by grace and are forgiven. But sin is still bad and needs to be addressed immediately. We cannot justify things. We cannot excuse away our sins and claim that because of grace we are okay. We reap what we sow. We may not be separated from Him eternally any longer, but we will still be judged and will still suffer consequences for our sins during our lives.
By no means comes from the Greek phrase, me genoito, which is an exclamation that means the same as of course not or heaven forbid. Of course we should not sin, regardless of our grace covering. By no means and heaven forbid we think it is okay since He has forgiven us. It is never okay. It is wrong and it separates us from walking in fellowship with Him.
We used to be slaves to sin. But we have been set free. Start living in that freedom. Address sin in your life, confess it, repent, and surrender your life fully to Him.
