Devotion: Romans 6:16

February 18 2025

Romans 6:16 Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey – whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness?

In today’s verse we are given a choice – either we are slaves to sin or we are slaves to righteousness. There is no halfway, no part way in between, or a little of this mixed with a little of that. It is either one or the other. It is the classic choice between good and evil.

Before we accepted Christ and the salvation He alone can offer us, we were slaves to sin and unrighteousness. Our lives were spent in fleshly pursuits, in servitude to the enemy. We were separated from Him and His goodness because we were of the world, living in darkness.  And it was a hopeless scenario where we had no future and no joy.

But then someone introduced us to Jesus and we saw that we have a choice – to continue down the path of destruction or to turn to the light, to His saving grace. And with that salvation opened a door to a future of hope, of peace and joy, of service to the King. We exchange our bonds of sin and shame for a yoke of righteousness.

What do you choose? Slave to sin and darkness or surrender in obedience and righteous living with Him forever?
