Romans 6:22 But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life.
As believers we have been set free from the chains of bondage that held us captive before we accepted Christ as our Savior. We were once stuck in our sinful ways, drowning in the darkness of a life doomed to eternal death. But the moment we confessed our sins and asked for His forgiveness, we were set free.
Instead of being unwilling slaves to sin, we now live as children of God. We have traded our shackles of oppression for a life we purposely live for Him. We now belong to Him, and we have dedicated ourselves to being His servants. We choose to be slaves to righteousness and holiness. It is a willingness to subject ourselves to His purpose, His ways, His plans for our lives. His Spirit within us now guides our footsteps and directs our actions.
A life lived for Him is not without reward. We see benefits to the things we do and the ways we interact with others. Our new life in Christ leads us to produce outward actions that reflect His holiness. We don’t just reflect His holiness, we are becoming more and more holy ourselves. We are changed and continue to grow as we live a life of purpose and seek righteousness. The ultimate reward we will receive for living a faith filled life for Him is eternal life. We are storing up treasures in heaven.
Being slaves to God does not mean we are now perfect and free from sin. We are human and still have free will. Therefore, sin will continue to rear its ugly head in our lives. The difference is now we are not slaves to sin. We have a Helper with us who will guide us toward making better choices and we can choose to not indulge in the sinful temptations taunting us, trying to distract us. With our eyes focused on Him we can navigate through the traps of the enemy and can walk in His light.
What is guiding your footsteps? Who are you living for and serving – self and its sinful ways or Christ and His righteousness? When in doubt, remember today’s verse. You have been taken from spiritual death to a spiritual life that reflects the righteousness and holiness of our Lord. You are free from the grips of death and are now able to serve freely as a child of God.
