Romans 6:7 …because anyone who has died has been set free from sin.
Today’s verse is a continuation of a thought. The previous verse says, “For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin…” This helps us to understand that what we are reading about is more than physical death. We know that a physical death ends the sinful nature we have and we will be with the Lord forever – nothing unclean can come before Him.
But we also experience a spiritual death. Our old, sin filled, unworthy self is crucified with Christ. We are buried with Him, and we will be raised once more. And while we live this side of heaven we need to understand that our old self has died and we are free. Yesterday we learned that we are no longer under the curse of the Law and today we see HOW we have been redeemed and restored.
Paul says that ANYONE who has died has been set free. Christ already paid the price, unlocked our shackles, and freed us from our prisons. But many still linger inside those prisons. Though they have been freed, they are not walking in that freedom. They hide away in self-made prisons of shame and blame, thinking they are unworthy of freedom. And while that is true (none of us are worthy, but that’s what is so amazing about His grace), we have been freed.
Today is the day to break the chains and to live free. The price is paid and we need to walk away from the prisons we keep ourselves locked in. The door is open – will you walk through it?
