Devotion: Romans 8:14

Aug 5, 2025

Romans 8:14 For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.

Before Jesus ascended, He promised to send the Spirit to comfort us and guide our steps. Upon receipt of forgiveness, we are filled with the Holy Spirit. And that Spirit within us leads us and directs our footsteps.

But sometimes it feels like all we do is make mistakes or take the wrong path. How do we stop walking our own path and submit to the guidance of the Spirit? We need to be one with the Spirit. We need to ask for help, and then listen for His guidance. We aren’t meant to go it alone and we don’t need to. We have the Spirit ready and willing, waiting for you to seek Him and already at work in your life.

Being led by the Spirit means our life is guided and influenced by the Spirit, not by us. We are not being forced to perform or made to be puppets. We still have free will, which is why we learned yesterday that our actions can grieve the Spirit. Instead, we are gently persuaded and guided. This happens through a process of illumination and conviction. We have truths brought to light before us and we feel guilt or a sense of negativity to the sins that cause sadness to God. We align our will with God’s.

All those led by the Spirit are children of God. We are adopted into His family and blessed with an inheritance of eternal salvation. We become heirs with Christ and experience the fullness of God’s blessings. We begin to live a life that reflects His character, His purpose. We desire living a life that pleases Him and the Spirit leads us as we strive to do so. We are released from condemnation from the Law and enjoy a relationship with God that is full of love and trust.

Have you let the Spirit take the wheel in your life? Or are you still driving on your own? It is time to open your hands and let go, allowing the Spirit to take the lead and being obedient and trusting as you follow His guidance. You will find yourself in an enriched, transformative relationship with God that overflows with freedom, joy, and peace.
