Devotion: Romans 8:15

July 17, 2024

Romans 8:15 The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.”

Isn’t it encouraging to know we are adopted into the family of God? Today’s verse gives me great joy because we are His children and we have no need to live in fear. We are not slaves. There’s nothing holding us back or pinning us down. We are loved and accepted.

God is not a slave owner or slave driver. We are not held captive or forced to do anything. Instead our response to God should reflect His love for us. Jesus has made spiritual adoption possible for us through His death on the cross. Instead of us being slaves we have become sons and daughters, adopted into God’s family. The spirit we receive in our adoption removes fear and insecurity, doubt or anxiety.

And now we cry Abba! The direct translation of Abba is Daddy. This is hard for me because I was raised to fear God and to never show Him disrespect. Calling Him Daddy feels too informal and borderline disrespectful for me. But we learn here that it is okay to cry out Abba, Father. He IS our daddy and He wants whatever is best for us while having that personal relationship with Him.

Thank your spiritual Daddy for your adoption. Praise Him for loving you enough to call you His child. And celebrate the freedom you have where fear has no hold on you.
