Devotion: Romans 8:31

November 1, 2024

Romans 8:31 What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?

What better verse can we start a month of devotions on than a promise that God is there for us and no one else can stand against us because of His great power? Nothing can stand against us. Nothing.

How encouraging and amazing is that? No matter how difficult things may seem, no matter how much we feel we are being attacked, nothing can stand against us because we belong to a God who is greater than all, a God who has already won the battle, defeated the darkness, saved our souls.

There are so many encouraging promises in the verses leading up to today’s verse. If you have the time, take a look at all of chapter 8 in Romans and see the promises that give us the hope we have. It is a hope in what is both seen and unseen (Romans 8:24-25).  We were chosen, redeemed, and will be glorified because of what Jesus did for us (Romans 8:29-30). He gave Himself as a sacrifice for us, cleansing us from the sins that separated us from God, saving us and giving us hope and a future forever with Him in heaven. Nothing and no one can separate us from His love (Romans 8:35).

At one point we were separated from Him because we were sinful creatures and sin kept us apart. But when we accepted Christ as our Savior, when we acknowledged that we were sinners in need of a Savior, and when we asked for forgiveness, we were made new. We were washed clean in the blood of His sacrifice and our sins no longer kept us held down. We became heirs with Christ and now have hope. Hope for a future in Him. Hope in the promise of eternity with our amazing God. Hope that is beyond words.

This month we will be focusing on the hope we have. We will explore all the ways He has blessed us and provided for us. And we will celebrate that hope because it brings joy beyond description.

Let’s start our month of hope out with thanksgiving at what He has done for us. If you have never confessed your sins and acknowledged your need for salvation, today is the day to do that. Be set free from the chains of sin, be washed clean in the blood of the Lamb, and join us in celebrating the hope we have as believers in Christ.
