Titus 1:2 In the hope of eternal life, which God, who does not lie, promised before the beginning of time.
Today’s verse is part of the introduction for the book of Titus, in which Paul is writing to Titus, his “true son” in faith. His mission with writing to Titus was to help establish churches in Crete and to clarify false doctrines or misunderstood doctrine the believers may have believed. And just like yesterday’s verse, we do not see any mention of faith in this passage, but we know that it is speaking of just that, the foundation for our beliefs and salvation.
In the hope of eternal life – This phrase refers to Paul’s hope for eternity, the same hope that each of us has when we accept Christ as our Savior. We know that we are saved and that we will be with Him forever. It was a deep desire Paul had to see everyone believe. He desired that all be saved and grow in their faith. And as believers, we should desire the same, not only for ourselves but for our friends, family, and neighbors.
Which God, who does not lie – This phrase is a reference to the character of God. We can trust in Him to be faithful to provide for us and for all of our needs. And as we learn to trust Him more and more, our faith grows. We know He will not lie. It is not in His nature and He will not do it. He is holy and righteous. And He is honest. He will not tolerate sin and will see justice be done, but lucky for us He provided a way to be absolved of our sins and through His grace and mercy we are saved and forgiven.
And finally, promised before the beginning of time – This is the promise we have of salvation. He made a way to redeem us, to save us from the sins we are born with thanks to the fall of Adam and Eve. He provided the solution to our problem of death and eternal separation by giving us Jesus who died for us on the cross and became the sacrifice needed to cover our sins.
All of this is the foundation for which our faith exists and the basis upon which we build and grow. If you do not have a personal relationship with Jesus and have not asked for His forgiveness, today is the day to make it happen. Today is the day to be saved and to be redeemed forever.
