Devotion: Titus 3:5-6

Aug 19 2025

Titus 3:5-6 …he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior…

As believers it is important for us to remember that there is nothing we can do to earn our salvation. We are saved by grace through faith (Ephesians 2:8-9) and we don’t do anything to receive it other than believe and repent. We cannot do righteous things or act good to receive salvation. It is freely given to us by God Who shows mercy on us because though we are undeserving, He loves us regardless.

He saved us through the washing of rebirth or regeneration. What does that mean? It refers to the spiritual cleansing we receive and the new birth we experience. We are new creations that have been washed in the blood of Jesus Christ. The old self is gone and a new you remains.

The verse goes on to say we are being renewed by the Holy Spirit who has been poured out on us. How beautiful that is. The Spirit isn’t just given to us. He is poured out on us, flowing over us and through us, cleansing us of the old sin-filled existence we once had.

Renewal is the ongoing, continuous process of transformation and spiritual growth we experience as Christians. It is not a one time event, but rather, a lifelong process. We never stop growing or learning. Every day we should be seeking God and His will for our lives, and through that ongoing act the Holy Spirit works in us, changing us and reshaping us into the image of God.

Our God is truly amazing and good. He loved us so much that He gave His Son to restore the broken relationship we had with Him and He pours His Spirit upon us, transforming us from something ugly and unworthy into His precious, cherished children. Never forget His great love and generous gifts. Let the Spirit shape you and mold you into something beautiful and worthy of Him.
