Zechariah 2:5 And I myself will be a wall of fire around it,’ declares the Lord , ‘and I will be its glory within.’
The final verse we are looking at today calls God a wall of fire. It is not a name, but is a description of His glory and power. We end our month of names with God in His infinite power and celebrate what an amazing God He is, protecting us from the world around us and filling us with His glory.
In ancient times a city would have thick walls around it for protection. A city that did not have these protecting walls would fall victim to enemy attacks and their city would be lost. Zechariah’s prophecies came at a time when Israel was rebuilding the walls around Jerusalem after their long captivity in Babylon. The people knew they needed walls to protect them. So this promise from God was especially timely for them, just as it can be for us today.
The Lord is our wall of protection. He is a wall of fire around us. He protects us from enemy attacks by being our protector, our wall. And within that wall is His glory. He is with us within, in all His wondrous glory. He is always there. Always waiting. Always available. He is God with us.
What an amazing promise. Not only is He protecting us today, He is with us always! It is a great way to end our month of looking at the names of God and a timely reminder then and now that God is surrounding us and keeping enemies at bay while holding us close in His arms.
