Earning Salvation

by Mandy Hughett

“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith–and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God– not by works, so that no one can boast.”  Ephesians 2:8-9.

Many people believe that in order to be saved, you must earn salvation. Ephesians 2:8-9 states that we do not EARN salvation. Jesus died on the cross for YOU. He paid the price for all of our sins. (Romans 5:8) All we have to do is accept His FREE gift of salvation.

We do not earn salvation. Even if we tried to, we never could. The word “grace” means undeserved favor. We don’t deserve salvation, but because Jesus loves us all so much, He gave it to us! Romans 6:23 says, “The wages of sin is death, the free gift of God is eternal life.”

“Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy He saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost…” (Titus 3:5) As you can see with the scripture here, you cannot earn salvation. It is GIVEN to us!

Now you may be wondering, WHY can we not earn salvation? Think of a person who you view as a “good” person. Good as in what you MIGHT call “goody2shoes” or “perfect.” Even these people make mistakes! Titus 3:3 says, “For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another.” Now you might be thinking, well if we all sin, can we just keep sinning because we know it is already paid for? Absolutely NOT. Matt 5:16 states “Let your light so shine before men, that they man see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” People will know you are Christian more by your acts than by your words. Glorify your Father at all times…but know you are not saved by earning salvation!
