If you have grown up in church most of your life or are just beginning your walk with Christ, this is for you. Many times our Christian “lingo” gets in the way of truly understanding what it is we are trying to say, or what is being said to us. Many times I hear, “take it or bring it to the cross”. I thought about that some, and I realized I didn’t know what that really meant. Bring it to the cross? What? How do I do that? So I asked my brother:
Ashley says: “How do I “bring it to the cross”? Tell it to God?”
Ryan says: “Yes, but then understand that once you bring it to Him you trust Him to take care of it. You can’t go back and bring it up anymore.”
“It” implies a burden, sin, something destructive, something against God, and regrets – anything that holds us back from God and diving into His love for us. Many times in prayer, I catch myself saying, God, take this out of my life – it’s not of You. Normally, it is the same thing I ask to be taken out of my life. In His Word, God says He forgives and then He forgets. With His help, it’s our job to do whatever it takes to stop doing what is actually hurting our walk with Him. He wants to help us, He needs to help us. He knows there is no way we can do it on our own, we’re human and He made it that way. This rides along with free will. He can’t invade our free will without us waiting Him enough to break our own will and trade it for His. This is when we “bring our sin to the cross” and trade it for His presence, love, joy, peace, thankfulness, mercy, and grace.
