I have never really been a fan of historical fiction that was based on times after the Civil War, so reading fiction about World War II was not on the top of my “to-read” list. But I was pleasantly surprised with this story and all that it offered. It was a slow start for me and I wasn’t a big fan of how it jumped from character to character with each chapter, but found the story itself to be interesting and informative. Since it was not in my typical era for reading, I didn’t have much prior knowledge of the events outside of what I learned in school. So needless to say, I learned quite a bit from this story. I found the writing to be well done, smoothly flowing from page to page without distraction or unnecessary verbiage. I loved the elements of faith scattered throughout the book, finding it to be a nice, clean Christian story, though faith was not the main focus. It was easy to hate the German soldiers and to cheer on the French rebels, thanks to the way Musser brought them to life. Well done! And the characters showed growth as you moved through the book and experienced all of the trials and struggles they were presented with as a result of the historic events. I am very glad that I pushed through the slow start because once I connected with the story I was unable to put it down. I found myself thinking about it more and more between readings, wondering what would happen next and what would happen when Peter and Isabelle finally saw one another face to face. This is a great story for anyone interested in World War II and its history, as well as for anyone looking for a clean, faith based story. It was definitely an enjoyable read.
