Getting out of the gutter

By: Sarah Nutter

Everyone wants to be “independent”. I’ll never understand why either. Even when we were kids, we wanted to do things ourselves. One thing that still confuses me is why we all want to be independent, but hate responsibility. In some cases, you just can’t have your cake and eat it, too.

Some people on the other hand love to be responsible. They know what it takes to reach that independence. They know that responsibility and independence go hand in hand. You can’t really have one without the other. Also they know that in order to reach it, they had to depend on someone else.

You know who I’m talking about, Christ! I’ll be the first one, to tell you that when you try doing everything yourself, you can’t. Once you let God take hold of the wheel, let Him guide you, and depend on Him, you’ll see that you can do all things through Him, because He gives you the strength. (Phil. 4:13)

Just recently, I was thinking about what my Sr. Pastor was saying one night. When things are in our possession, they’re our responsibility.

So that’s good news. We’re not the only ones who have responsibilities!

God does too. It’s like when you get a car, it’s your job to put gas in it, keep it clean, and change the oil. That’s sort of like us. We’re God’s. It’s His job to take care of us. That’s what makes Him independent, what makes you independent? When you depend on God.
