Review:
I guess I have never read anything about Ida B. Wells up until now. The name was familiar to me, so I assumed I knew who she was and some of her accomplishments, but apparently I was mistaken. I found everything in this book to be new information for me. It was ALL a learning experience, teaching me new things about a famous name I thought I had knowledge of. It was a well written book that was easy to read and even easier to understand, perfect for children to learn from. Having been a teacher prior to my ministry work, I have a long history of seeking out quality reference materials and biographies for students. This easily would have been one I would have picked up for my classroom. It is written in a style that younger readers will understand and engage with, while at the same time is not boring or overly academic in nature. It would be a great addition to your Black History Month collection, as well as your biography selections. Though written for fifth through seventh grade readers, it can easily be read alound to younger students and still be understood. And it would make for great discussions after. It could easily be read in one sitting or spread out over the course of a few days of shorter readings and more discussion. I was greatly impressed by this book and have added it to my daughter’s shelves for her own reference collection.
