Interview with Jacob’s Generation

by Jaye

T4JYM: What is the main focus in your ministry? Teens? The lost? The hurting? Why did you decide up on this as a focus?

JG: The main focus in our ministry is people. Building relationships with teens and just hanging out with them. If we can earn their friendship through that and our music then I think we have the right to tell them about Jesus.

T4JYM: What does your groups name mean?

JG: Our name comes from Psalm 24:6 “such is a Generation of those who seek your face, oh God of Jacob.” We aren’t Generation x. But we aren’t Jacob’s Generation either. We just try to be. I think we can all try to be a generation seeking God’s face. And when we fail, he picks us up again. If you look at Jacob in the Bible, he wasn’t the best example to follow. He deceived his father for his blessing! But that is encouraging to me because I know I fail others and I fail God. But ultimately Jacob was a man who sought after God and that’s who we want to be.

T4JYM: Where did you come up with it?

JG: We had a revival at our church and the speaker was encouraging us to be Godly people to be a new Generation: a Generation of Jacob.

T4JYM: Do you ever feel that you are not ready Spiritually to be performing and ministering as you are doing now?

JG: We pray before every concert. It’s also kind of a rallying time. We get pumped -it’s so exciting! We sometimes spend time to ourselves squaring up with God in prayer. Coming to him in grattitude and confession before stepping on to the stage. If we aren’t Right with God, how can we tell others to do so?

T4JYG: If you could meet any one person, past, present or future, who would you meet? Why would you choose that person? What would you ask them?

JG: I’d love to meet somebody from the old testament. Moses would be an awesome guy to talk to. He witnessed some amazing miracles. The red Sea. Need I say more? I would be interested in seeing if he ever felt overwhelmed or insufficient to do such great things.

T4JYM: If you could ask Jesus any one question, what would you ask and why?

JG: How Can you love us so much?

T4JYM: When did you feel called to perform in a group like this? Have you felt God’s hand guiding you towards this all along?

JG: I think we all have dreamed of being in a band. I remember going to concerts of Plankeye, Newsboys, and DC Talk in Middle schol and Just wanting so bad to be a part of what they were doing. JG alows us to do what we love and share who we love. I think God placed all of us together. It’s amazing how different our gifts are and how they compliment each other for one purpose.

T4JYM: Do you make it a goal to use your music to minister to people? Or do you just write for the sake of writing and performing?

JG: Our music is definitely a spring board to reach people. Even if one person is changed or challenged it was worth our time.

T4JYM: What is the message you are trying to get across with your music?

JG: The message we want to get accross is “Live it Up” The Christian life is fulfilling, joyous, and exciting. We want you to know that you can have a great time and live a life pleasing to God at the same time. a life of love awaits everyone.

T4JYM: What is the biggest thing God has done during one of your concerts?

JG: The biggest thing at one of our concerts is to see young people come to Jesus. Period. Yeah some people get into the music- but that’s nothing compared to a changed life. When people tell me they smashed all their secular CD’s- that is the work of the Holy Spirit in their life and THAT is big.

T4JYM: Do you write your own music?

JG: Yes. We write our own music. Our latest CD is titled “Looking to Nowhere” which features ten original songs. We also play worship songs at our live shows from different artists.

T4JYM: Are you involved in any other ministries?

JG: Right now we are focused on this ministry. We have been involved in the college ministry at Asbury Church and still attend the “Breakthru” service when we are home.

T4JYM: What is your musical background? Did you take lessons to gain the musical skills you have now?

JG: We have all had lessons from piano to trumpet but are basically self taught when it comes to the instruments in the band.

T4JYM: How much time do you spend practicing as a group? How much time do you practice individually?

JG: We try to practice 3-4 times a week as a band. As far as individually- Dustin plays guitar all the time! He loves it and does it whenever he gets the chance.

T4JYM: How do you fill your spare time while on tour?

JG: We do some goofy stuff on tour. When we are in the van we play electronic Yahtzee or try to free-style rap. We also watch cartoons on our ghetto rigged TV/VCR. We have been known to play with army men and go surfing at odd hours of the night. goofy games and spontinuity.
