Author of Whispers at Painswick Manor
T4JYM: Can you tell us about your latest book and what readers can expect from it?
JK: Readers can expect a novel about a young woman trying to find her place in the world and along the way becoming embroiled in a mystery and discovering true love. Here’s a description:
Anne Loveday, a surgeon’s daughter, is determined to live a single, useful life. To escape her matchmaking stepmother, she accepts an invitation from an old friend to return to Painswick, the place she and her sister spent many happy summers until that last, fateful year. Soon after arriving, Anne is asked to serve as sick-room nurse to Lady Celia, who forbade her nephew to marry Anne’s sister years before. Pushing aside resentments, Anne moves into Painswick Court, which is rumored to be haunted. Also in residence are Lady Celia’s spinster daughter, her handsome adult nephews, and a secretive new lady’s maid. Two local doctors visit regularly as well, one of whom admires Anne while concealing secrets of his own. As an escalating series of mishaps befalls her patient, Anne realizes someone is trying to kill the woman. But who? When Anne finds herself a suspect and her determination to avoid romance challenged, can she discover the real killer—and protect her heart—before it’s too late?
T4JYM: Please tell our readers about some of the books you have written. Which book is your favorite?
JK: All of my novels (22 and counting!) are set in England during the Regency era (think Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, etc.) They all have drama, faith, and romance and many include mystery as well. It would be difficult to pick a favorite, but I really do enjoy writing novels with mystery, so besides this new book, I also really like The Secret of Pembrooke Park.
T4JYM: What is next for you? Are you working on something new?
JK: Yes, I am working on a new suspenseful romance set on the remote coast of North Devon, which is scheduled to release in December 2026.
T4JYM: I see from your website that you have had book readings and releases all over the world. What area has been your favorite to visit and share your works?
JK: Recently, my husband and I had the privilege of meeting readers in Hungary and Slovakia. That was such a pleasure and a huge blessing.
T4JYM: I love that you include research and photos that inspired your writing on your website. How much time and research goes into a book? And how do you ensure they are accurate?
JK: I do research my books as thoroughly as I can, both before I begin a new novel, and when questions arise as I write. I also love visiting my settings in England to be better able to describe them for readers.
T4JYM: Who are some of the authors you enjoy reading? What authors have inspired you as a writer?
JK: Jane Austen, Charlotte Brontë, Elizabeth Gaskell, Georgette Heyer, and many others.
T4JYM: Please tell us how you came to be a Christian and how this has influenced your writing.
JK: I grew up believing in God but knew little about Jesus or the Bible. When I went away to college, I cast aside the beliefs I had been raised with, as many young people do. But a few years later, increasingly aware of my sin and a growing emptiness, God used various situations and people to help me realize my need of a savior. I accepted Jesus and was baptized. I am grateful God pursued me and saved me, and eventually blessed me with a Christian husband and a career as a novelist. In my writing, I endeavor to give God glory and highlight the grace and second chances He offers. Today, my life is full of both blessings and challenges. I am thankful the Lord is with me through it all.
