Paying Attention to Road Signs

By : Jennifer Jenkins

Psalm 143:7-12 Answer me quickly, O Lord; my spirit fails. Do not hide Your face from me or I will be like those who go down to the pit. Let the morning bring me word of Your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in You. Show me the way I should go, for to You I lift up my soul. Rescue me from my enemies, O Lord, for I hide myself in You. Teach me to do Your will, for You are my God; may Your good Spirit lead me on level ground. For Your name’s sake, O Lord, preserve my life; in Your righteousness, bring me out of trouble. In Your unfailing love, silence my enemies; destroy all my foes, for I am Your servant.

How to create chaos? Remove a stop sign.

I am not recommending this as a prank. When our university decided to turn a three-way stop into a two-way stop, though, some drivers felt it was a cruel joke, and they were not laughing.

For several days afterward, approaching the intersection was an adventure. Drivers who still had to observe the stop sign assumed that oncoming traffic did too, and at least once I had to swerve to avoid an unenlightened motorist who was expecting me to stop.

As the semester progressed, everyone got used to the new system. But it was amusing to see the same problems at graduation as uninformed parents and alumni came back, and the chaos ensued.

In the days before cars (and now-you-see-’em, now-you-don’t stop signs), people faced their own highway hazards. They could be as simple as stones to trip over, as scary as high ledges, or as dangerous as robbers. When they prayed to God for travel safety, it was serious business.

Also, when they compared life to a journey, they were again thinking about the variety of hazards they faced, not about speed and comfort. They prayed that God would guide them, making their path straight, level, and above all, safe.

As I look at my life, I see dangers too. A lot of travelers out there are ignoring the moral road signs. If I don’t watch out, I might get caught up in their wrecks. A wrong turn could send me plunging off a steep cliff.

Do I expect God to supernaturally intervene, straightening curves like on a tire commercial? Hardly. I need to obey His road signs. Others in my path might not always do the same, but alert and wise driving will help me avoid them.

As you drive your car, obey all stop signs–at least the ones that are really there. In life’s journey, obey God’s direction, as detailed in His Word.
