T4JYM: I see you have a new book set to release early in February 2025. Please share with our readers what the book is about and where you got your inspiration from when writing it.
SS: Desperate to escape the occupied Netherlands in 1941, Cilla van der Zee agrees to become a spy in Britain. But her plans to betray the Germans and work for the Allied cause are derailed when a suspicious Royal Navy officer finds her on the shores of his Scottish home.
T4JYM: What comes next? Are you working on something new?
SS: I’m almost finished with my next novel, which is scheduled for February 2026, and I’m thrilled to have signed a contract for another three World War II novels, plus a Christmas novella.
My next novel is set in Nazi-occupied Jersey in the British Channel Islands, where a female physician helps people hiding from the Germans. But when a Dutch engineer sneaks maps of fortifications off the island, it could cost them both everything they love.
T4JYM: You have some impressive educational accomplishments! How have your advanced degrees influenced your writing? Or have they had any impact?
SS: I do have an odd background for a novelist — not many chemistry majors or pharmacists in the writing world — but my background does help in unexpected ways. Studying science teaches an analytical way of thinking as well as methods for organizing data — both of which come in handy for historical research and for the editing process. Also, my characters keep getting sick and injured, cruel author that I am! So my health care background comes in handy!
T4JYM: What do you like to do in your down time?
SS: I love taking long walks with our dogs! My husband and I have two big, active rescue dogs, and they love their exercise. Since writing is a sedentary profession, my morning walks are crucial for my physical and mental health!
My other great joy is playing with our adorable two-year-old grandson.
T4JYM: Are you involved in ministry in your own church or anywhere else?
SS: I am! I teach Sunday school for upper elementary school students, I teach women’s Bible studies, and my husband and I co-lead a small group. Teaching is such fun for me. I love it when people grasp a Bible concept — and the kids keep me on my toes!
I also serve as program director for the West Coast Christian Writers Conference. Since I’ve benefitted from the teaching and mentoring I’ve received through conferences, I love being able to give back in this way.
