Review:

I did not read the first book in this series, so missed out on some of the background information and history of some of the characters. But despite that, I had no trouble reading this book. It can easily be read as a standalone story, though there are people from the first book that we meet again in the second (making me now want to go back and read their story in the first!).  I had a slightly slow staret to this book, taking my time to get into the story, but once I got going I found I simply could not put it down. It mixed the elements of romance and mystery nicely with the romance itself naturally developing throughout the story without being the focus of the book. The chracters were well developed and easy to relate to, making you instantly connect with them and champion on their causes. I loved the characters of Professor Pendleton, who was a bit absent-minded, and Penny, the younger sister to main chracter Eva Inman. I also enjoyed the archaeology aspect and the history lesson that came with their discoveries. It was nicely tied in without being overly academic or distracting from the plot. I did find myself predicting some of the things that happened, but still found myself pleasantly surprised at the things I got wrong. That is always a fun aspect of any mystery! The twists were definitely unexpected! I was also surpised at how the final resolution to the story came so late in the book! True, once resolution is reached the story quickly draws to an end, but this story left me wondering how much “story” could still be told with so few pages left in the book. At one point you could feel the heaviness and despair of a hopeless situation – a true testament to Griep’s storytelling abilities. I HIGHLY recommend this book and am now going to go back and get a copy of the first one to read!
