Author of A Healing Touch
T4JYM: Tell our readers a little about your latest book, A Healing Touch, coming out October 1, 2024, and what they can expect from it.
SWF: “A Healing Touch” is a story about love, healing, and unexpected friendships. It follows three very different women as they face life’s challenges and discover the strength to move forward. The heart of the story revolves around a doctor, Ruth Stoltzfus, in a close-knit Amish community. Dok is the doctor we all wish we had – the one who believes in making house calls. Readers can expect a mix of heartfelt moments, a bit of humor, and a glimpse into how modern and traditional worlds collide. It’s uplifting and full of hope – perfect for fans of Amish and contemporary fiction. In fact, even if you don’t read (or like) Amish fiction, I think you’ll enjoy this story.
T4JYM: What’s next? What is in the works for you and what can readers be watching for since you have a new book launching next month?
SWF: Coming out on November 18th is a different kind of book for me: “A Year of Flowers.” It’s a collection of four novellas about three teenaged girls who work in a flower shop – until something dreadful happens and they vanish. Each novella picks up seven years later, showing, one by one, what they’ve done with their love of flowers. The fourth novella brings them all back to the shop to face the consequences of that fateful day. It’s a bit of mystery, a touch of romance, and, of course, lots and lots of flowers.
T4JYM: How do you decide what to write about? Where do you draw inspiration from?
SWF: Inspiration comes from everywhere! Sometimes it’s something simple that sparks a story idea. My favorite example is from my early morning writing time. I listen to a classical music radio station, and one day I heard the radio host mention a single line – “This day in history…” – I stopped everything and dug deep into research. It turned into one of my bestselling books, “Moonlight School.” I think paying attention to inspiration is key. Not easy, but wow, those sparks can lead to the best stories!
T4JYM: Do you have any formal education in writing or literature studies?
SWF: I was one of those invisible kids in school – never singled out for any talent. Honestly, I don’t remember any teacher, or even my parents, thinking I was a gifted writer. I have a college degree, but it wasn’t specific to writing. All that said, I’ve always loved to write. Loved, loved, loved it. That passion has never left me… And neither have the doubts. But let’s flip that around! Humility is an asset. It keeps me grateful and grounded, open to continually learning and improving my skills.
T4JYM: Are you involved in ministry in your own church or anywhere else?
SWF: During the pandemic, I started a small neighborhood Bible study with three women, and now we’re up to 16! We’ve got seekers of all kinds – different ages, backgrounds, and faiths. It’s incredible what can happen when you mix a bit of curiosity, a need for community, and God’s living Word. Who would’ve thought that social distancing could bring us closer together?
T4JYM: What advice would you give to the youth of this world?
SWF: You were put on this earth, at this time, for a reason. God doesn’t need you – He wants you! When the troubles of this world feel overwhelming, it’s easy to get caught up in a hopeless pessimism. But there has never been a shortage of troubles, not ever, no matter the generation. The good news? “Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever” (Hebrews 13:8). So keep your eyes on Him, and trust that He has a purpose for you, right where you are.
T4JYM: Any final thoughts you want to share?
