Too Holy?

By: Darin Smith

READ: Psalm 119:17-24

Psalm 119:21 (NIV) “My soul is consumed with longing for your laws at all times.”

For Christians in America, it is often uncomfortable to be around someone that constantly talks about the Lord. Such a person is usually considered “too holy” to be real. Perhaps this person talks about what the Lord is doing in his or her life as a testimony to His goodness. Or maybe this person quotes Bible verses or passages to encourage his or her friends in whatever place they find themselves.

The fact is that some Christians can’t see how a person can so easily thank the Lord for some of life’s darkest times. It is seems too spiritual to be practical and real.

The psalmist in today’s reading seems to be the type of person that couldn’t get enough of God.

Each verse displays his love for the laws and precepts of God. Though each law was difficult to follow, the psalmist wrote, “I will praise you with an upright heart as I learn your righteous laws” (Psalm 119:7).Persecution couldn’t even stop his love for the Lord. While being slandered for his love of the Lord, the psalmist didn’t react violently or harshly. Instead, he meditated and turned to the promises of the Lord. In all areas, this man’s life was a pleasing aroma of faith to the Lord.

Have you lost that kind passion for Christ? Has your heart been divided among many interests—most of them healthy and good interests? But you have to admit that you are not seeking the Lord 100% with your whole heart. What would it be like if Christ moved in your heart today to give Him all of your heart, to seek Him with everything you’ve got, nothing held back? What a glorious testimony to be able from this day forward to say with all those who can speak of the Lord in every breath and with the psalmist:
