What is the Bible?

The name Bible comes from a Greek word biblos. It means little books. The Bible is like a library of little books. If you look at your Bible you will see that there are 66 books. When we put them all together we get a small library, or the Bible.

The Bible is put together into two sections. One section is called the Old Testament. It is the stories that we hear and read about that happened BEFORE Jesus came to earth. The stories after Jesus came to earth is called the New Testament.

Why do we call one Old and one New? A testament is like a promise. It is an agreement between two people usually, or in our case, between God and people. It can also be called a covenant. The Old Testament or covenant was about the Law. That means we learned how to live, what is right and what is wrong.

But the problem is that people cannot keep all of the Laws. It is not possible. That is why we have the New Testament.

In the New Testament we see that Jesus, God’s Son, came to earth, and He died for our sins. In the Old Testament they realized that they were not perfect and they needed to offer a sacrifice to God for them to be forgiven. Jesus is our sacrifice! He gave Himself to God so that we could be forgiven.

The New Testament is the new agreement between God and people. The new agreement is that if you accept Jesus as the sacrifice for your sins you will be forgiven and saved.
